Interview with ClickHouse

What is your PostgreSQL centered product?
ClickHouse Managed Postgres is a fully managed Postgres service that runs alongside ClickHouse on one platform. It uses local NVMe storage, which removes the network hop between compute and storage, so Postgres can run up to 10x faster. It includes high availability, point-in-time recovery, and read replicas.
What sets it apart is how closely it connects to and offloads analytics workloads to ClickHouse, an open source analytical database. WalShadow (in private preview, open-source) reads the physical WAL and replicates changes to ClickHouse in around 200 ms, without logical replication slots. The open-source pg_clickhouse extension lets applications query transactional and analytical data through standard Postgres.
The same team also builds other open-source Postgres projects, including pg_stat_ch, pg_re2, pg_chdb, so the managed product and the community tooling strengthen each other.
How does PostgreSQL fit into your product offering, and why did you choose it?
Most real-time analytics stacks start with Postgres for the application and add ClickHouse once dashboards and analytical queries outgrow OLTP. Thousands of companies use this pattern. ClickHouse acquired PeerDB in 2024 to make Postgres-to-ClickHouse CDC easier, and that technology now powers Postgres CDC in ClickPipes for more than a thousand customers.
We chose Postgres because it's the transactional database our customers already trust. It has familiar tooling, a huge range of extensions and integrations, and a community that keeps improving the engine. ClickHouse Managed Postgres puts both sides of that stack on one platform, with NVMe-backed Postgres for OLTP, ClickHouse for analytics, and native integration between the two.
We aren't trying to replace Postgres with something proprietary. We want to run excellent Postgres next to excellent ClickHouse, with open-source extensions and CDC to make the two work as one data stack.
Will anyone from your team be presenting at PostgreSQL Conference Europe? What is the talk about and why does this topic matter?
Gülçin Yıldırım Jelínek is giving two talks: “Postgres for Everything, Until It Isn't,” with Petr Jelínek (EDB), explores where Postgres excels and when specialized analytics engines help; “What's New with Monitoring in PostgreSQL 19” covers observability improvements for daily operations. On Community Events Day, she is co-organizing the PostgreSQL on Kubernetes Summit with Floor Drees and the PostgreSQL Observability Summit with Pavlo Golub, Lukas Fittl, Jimmy Angelakos, and Adrien Obernesser.
David Wheeler is presenting “How to Contribute to the PostgreSQL Documentation” and co-organizing “A Postgres Ecosystem Foundation?” on Community Events Day. These sessions explore ways to contribute to Postgres and support its ecosystem.
Daniel Phiri is giving our Silver sponsor lightning talk, “Off the WAL: Postgres to ClickHouse Without Logical Replication,” showing how WalShadow reads physical WAL to get changes into ClickHouse in around 200 ms. Together, our sessions cover practical operations, community contribution, and real-time analytics, sharing what we're learning while building ClickHouse Managed Postgres.
